History behind the OLD MANSE
The Old Manse is located in Concord, Massachusetts. It was built in 1770 by Rev. William Emerson, grandfather of Ralph Waldo Emerson, and is a National Historic Landmark. It is open to the public for tours and for special events. The house is significant for its associations with some of the major figures and events of the American Revolution and Transcendentalism. It was the home of Ralph Waldo Emerson and his family when he wrote his first major work, Nature, published in 1836. It was also the home of Nathaniel Hawthorne and his family from 1842 to 1845.
During their time there, Hawthorne wrote his novels The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables, as well as his short story collection Mosses from an Old Manse. The Old Manse managed by the Trustees of Reservations and is open to visitors from April 1 to November 30. The house is furnished as it would have been during the time of the Emersons and Hawthornes, with period furniture, artwork, and a collection of Hawthorne memorabilia.
